A study conducted over two breeding seasons in Tasmanian forests has found there are multiple threats to the Swift Parrot. These include habitat loss, predation from other species and climate change.
Researchers found no evidence of sugar gliders killing Swift Parrots. It’s despite the major parties and industry claiming for years that sugar gliders are the main threat to the critically endangered parrot.
This study makes clear a nuanced approach is needed to protect the Swift Parrot. We need proper conservation planning that takes into account the multiple drivers of the species’ decline.
The Liberals and industry can’t continue using sugar gliders as a scapegoat for the serious decline in Swift Parrot numbers. They need to address the fact that native forest logging and burning is destroying this species’ habitat.
Native forest logging needs to end to protect threatened species like the Swift Parrot. With the new contracts for native forest logging beyond 2027 not yet signed, now is the perfect time to do it.
