The Greens stand with CPSU and HACSU child safety workers taking strike action today. The Liberal Government must ensure there are enough staff to care for our children, and that staff have the support they need.

Child safety worker shortages put Tasmanian kids at risk. After the devastating stories we heard in the Commission of Inquiry, it’s clear the Liberal Government can no longer ignore this crisis.

Tasmanian child safety workers should not be paid less than their mainland counterparts. They’re doing the same job, and experiencing the same cost of living crisis.

The Government must also protect children in Tasmania by closing Ashley Youth Detention Centre now. The longer it takes to close, the greater the risk to young people. The Commission of Inquiry was clear – Ashley must be closed as soon as possible to keep children safe.

This National Child Protection Week, the Liberal Government must take real action to ensure the safety and wellbeing of every child. This includes providing ongoing increased funding of Child Safety Services and doing the necessary work to close Ashley Youth Detention Centre as soon as possible.
