We welcome the establishment of an essential inquiry into AI and data centres in Tasmania, following months of Greens’ advocacy.
The rapid growth of AI and data facilities without transparency, community consultation, regulation or legislative guardrails risking our states resources, has been met with strong community concerns. This is why the Greens have been working across Parliament for months to see an inquiry was established.
We are pleased to see that Government Administration Committee A has taken up the call and established an Inquiry into AI and data facilities.
This inquiry will provide much-needed oversight on the expansion of AI data centres to ensure the Tasmanian community receive tangible benefits. It will also be empowered to recommend legislation and regulations needed for the industry, in the aim of protecting public resources, the environment, and people of Tasmania.
The Greens look forward to seeing this important inquiry progress, and to ensure Tasmanians genuinely benefit from any AI or data facility built in our state.
