The newly released AMA Public Hospital Report Card reinforces again why the Liberals should be focusing on investment in the health system, not building a billion-dollar stadium.
The AMA report shows Tasmania is the only state lagging the national average on all four key indicators considered by the report. It also shows we’re one of only two states that went backwards compared to the previous year on both emergency department KPIs.
All Tasmanians know our health system is in terrible shape, but the government often tries to excuse themselves for this situation by saying health is a nationwide issue. That’s true – but it actually makes the fact Tasmania is lagging the rest of the country even more concerning.
The most worrying thing about this report is Tasmania’s emergency department results. It shows the situation in EDs across the mainland has seen stabilisation or improvement in all but one jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Tassie is going in the other direction.
Just like the wider community, the AMA are sick and tired of politicians playing the blame game when it comes to health. We agree. It’s time for both levels of government to take responsibility for what’s happening, and to invest the time and money that’s needed into improving healthcare for Tasmanians.
Fixing the significant and growing problems in health is critical for Tasmania’s future. As the AMA points out, we have a huge need for health infrastructure, but we’ve heard no plans for how to pay for it. This should be the focus of government – not building a billion-dollar plus stadium.
