There’s been another awful fall in the “We Stand with Tasmania” race at the notorious Wentworth Park in NSW, leaving a greyhound injured.
Trunkey Aviator fell on the first turn of the race, tumbling over himself multiple times. The dog suffered hamstring and thigh muscle strains and was given only 10 days to recover.
The same poor dog also fell during last week’s race and was given just 5 days to recover. It says a lot about the industry that claims to love their dogs.
Trunkey Aviator isn’t the first greyhound to be injured in our name. Just two weeks ago, Manila Shelby fell and slammed into a metal railing while participating in the “We Stand With Tasmania” race.
The stewards’ report said she likely broke her shoulder blade and injured her tricep and would be incapacitated for 60 days. This is the grim reality of an industry that profits from putting dogs in danger.
Even on the mainland, greyhounds are being injured in support of the Tasmanian racing industry. We have a chance to stop it and end the suffering along with the public subsidies.
Tasmanian Labor can’t keep letting these animal welfare travesties continue. They need to catch up with the clear majority of Tasmanians who know these dogs deserve a good life, and let to them run free.
