The physically and mentally debilitating symptoms of perimenopause and menopause on women can affect their ability to participate in the workforce. This has serious financial impacts on women, and overall productivity on a strained workforce.

13% of women leave the workforce due to menopausal symptoms. Women retire 7.4 years earlier than men, equating to a loss of salary and super of more than $577,512, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Perimenopause and menopause have significant impacts on female-dominated fields, such as the caring industries and education. We need better understanding in workplaces, working conditions and leave entitlements to ensure sufferers can continue to participate in the workforce.

* Helen Burnet MP is hosting an information session on the effects of menopause in Parliament House at lunchtime today. The event will raise awareness of the condition and the actions needed to better support sufferers.
