| The Greens welcome the Government’s $424,600 investment with Just Cats Tasmania to establish just the state’s third approved Cat Management facility, in Burnie. But the Liberals need to get serious, and fast, if Tasmania is to properly deal with the rapidly increasing issue of feral cats.
This funding announcement for the North West coincided with Landcare’s recent launch of their exceptional ‘Decision Guide for Stray and Feral Cat Management in Tasmania 2025’. Feral cats are a huge threat to our island’s endemic, unique native wildlife, particularly birds, as well as our agricultural sector. I’m hearing serious reports from the Northern Midlands about the impacts toxoplasmosis is having on our sheep farmers who are seeing growing cases of lambing issues caused by toxoplasmosis. By not dealing with Tasmania’s feral cat problem we are gambling with our precious wildlife and the agricultural industry’s future. It’s 2025 – where is the 2024-2029 Cat Management Plan and investment strategy? Cat management is a huge issue that requires a holistic state approach, which means the Liberals need to step up and take responsibility instead of continually leaning on underrescourced councils and NGOs like Landcare to present solutions. The Greens will stand with councils, wildlife carers, farmers and all who are stepping up to tackle cat management in our state. It’s time the Liberals got serious and presented a holistic management plan with sufficient funding for its full implementation. |
