The Greens celebrate the Cenotaph’s 100th anniversary. The Cenotaph is a sacred place of remembrance of those who’ve served our country.
While the Greens don’t support war, we have always stood behind Tasmania’s veterans. The Cenotaph is a central point to reflect on the courage, sacrifice and commitment of Tasmania’s servicepeople.
Initially erected to commemorate the First World War, it’s now a place to remember Tasmanians who served in wars across our nation’s history. At 100 years old, it’s Australia’s oldest war memorial.
Sitting atop the Queen’s Domain, the Cenotaph is visible throughout the city and across the Derwent River, with its prominence a constant reminder of veterans’ sacrifices. It is an intrinsic part of Hobart’s heritage landscape.
This anniversary comes at a difficult time, with the Legislative Council just having approved a stadium which will irreparably damage the sightlines of the Cenotaph. We want to assure Tasmanian veterans and the community: the Greens won’t stop fighting to protect this sacred place.
