The Greens welcome Premier Jeremy Rockliff’s commitment to bringing the Commission of Inquiry response budget bill on for debate the first day back in Parliament.

Premier Rockliff wrote to me late yesterday to confirm this crucial bill will be tabled and debated on Tuesday.

We thank the Premier for making this commitment clearly and ahead of time. Combined with Labor’s recent agreement to delay their planned no confidence motion if such a guarantee was provided by the Premier, this ensures the passage of the CoI bill will be the first substantive matter considered by the House in the upcoming week.

A few days ago it looked like this critically important and urgent bill could be delayed or even derailed by political manoeuvres - a prospect that understandably caused much distress for victim-survivors. The Greens proposed a compromise, and we are pleased both the Liberals and Labor have agreed to this approach for the return of Parliament.

We extend our thanks to Jeremy Rockliff and Rebecca White for their communications in this matter, and for putting this most important of matter of child safety first.

Tasmanians can now be assured the funding that’s required to progress urgent action on the CoI response will be the top priority of Parliament - as it should be.
