The Greens welcome the government’s move towards responding to the rising cost of fuel. But more needs to be done to help community organisations, and the Tasmanians they support, through this crisis.

Tasmanians have already been struggling with the rising cost of living. Things are only getting worse as the conflict in the Middle East drives up fuel prices.

It’s good to see the government taking action with emergency laws to control the rising cost of fuel. But this alone is not enough to ease the pressures Tasmanians are facing.

Community service organisations are on the frontline supporting Tasmanians doing it tough. Need was already high, and this is only going to increase with fuel price rises.

These organisations were already struggling to cope with demand due to chronic underfunding. At a time when Tasmanians need more help than ever, community organisations need an immediate increase in funding so they can give Tasmanians the support they need.

Tasmanians need more support from the government to get through this crisis.

Emergency measures are good, but emergency funding for community service organisations is also critical.

The Greens call on Premier Rockliff to give an emergency funding injection to community organisations and increase their long-term funding in the State Budget.
