It’s clear the State’s corporatist, hard-line changes to trespass laws are neither ending efforts to save native forests and wilderness, nor being effective in the courts.  Time for repeal.

The Liberals’ amendments to the Police Offences Act in 2022 sought to impose jail time and harsh financial penalties on peaceful protestors defending Lutruwita’s forests, wilderness, oceans and wildlife from destruction.

These changes were a vain attempt on the part of the Liberal government to try to arrest their way out of a climate and biodiversity emergency on behalf of their corporate donors.

The real crimes being perpetrated here are against nature and future generations.  Both the Liberals and Labor are complicit in this intergenerational theft.

Thankfully, Tasmania’s courts aren’t imposing those draconian penalties.

Legislative attempts to stifle dissent and stop peaceful protest are not working and they never will.

Tasmanians who care and want to make the world a better place have a right to peaceful protest.

The Greens are committed to the repeal of these oppressive, offensive and ineffective anti-protest laws.

Stay tuned!
