The Greens welcome the Hobart City Council’s decision to continue pursuing a waterfront walkway around Battery Point. With responsibility for Crown Licences complicating public access across public land, Minister Duigan must work with the Council to make the walkway happen.
The Greens have long advocated for a walkway at Battery Point. It would be a great way to provide people with more active transport options so they can safely walk and cycle into Hobart from Sandy Bay. That’s good for health, and it’s good for the city.
The idea of a walkway at Battery Point is widely supported by the community. It’s too important to walk away from and we’re happy to hear the Hobart City Council continues to agree.
Minister Duigan has a responsibility to work with residents and the Hobart City Council to find a way forward. The Minister must fulfil the Council’s request to assess the status of private licenses over Crown Land and work to see them amended, proactively helping deliver the walkway.
