The Liberals have consistently failed to take the urgent action needed in this climate crisis. In the next Parliament, the Greens will fight for targets to reduce emissions across sectors, ensuring real climate action.
We’re in a climate emergency, which is already impacting Tasmanians’ way of life. We saw record temperatures again last summer, resulting in wildfires and mass salmon mortalities which polluted Tasmanian’s waters and beaches.
The Liberals should be acting urgently to protect Tasmanians from the worst impacts of the climate crisis. Instead, they’re committed to delay, false solutions and greenwashing. Is it any wonder, with climate-denying Eric Abetz in the Liberal Party Room?
While the Liberals might celebrate this state being net zero, carbon emissions have continued business as usual for decades. They’re relying on the reduction of logging the Greens secured the last time we were in the balance of power that makes us net zero, while at the same time seeking to log and burn those forests.
The Liberals are failing to take real and obvious solutions to the climate crisis, like ending native forest logging, making public transport free or rolling out rooftop solar to social and public housing. It’s a terrible betrayal of current and future generations of Tasmanians.
We need a legislated overall target for emissions reduction, and annual targets across sectors, to hold the major parties accountable and ensure they make the emissions reductions needed. In the balance of power, the Greens will fight for emissions reductions targets, and real climate action.
