The Greens welcome the news that the coal mine at Fingal has been abandoned, in a win for the climate and local community. The abandonment of the coal mine is a huge win for the grassroots community members who stood up against this project.

The proposed coal mine would have proven a climate disaster producing dangerous emissions when we need to be drastically reducing carbon emissions.

We’re in a climate crisis, and the Liberal Government must rule out any new coal mines or exploration in this state. The science is clear – carbon emissions from fossil fuels are contributing to global warming, and we simply should not be digging up any more coal.

In a climate crisis, coal mines have no place in lutruwita / Tasmania. If our island is to authentically position itself as a climate leader, and for our ‘clean and green’ brand to retain its integrity, then the Liberal Government must commit to no further fossil fuel exploration or coal mines in this state.
