The Greens echo the calls of The Tenants Union of Tasmania for greater funding to assist renters as demand grows. The Tenants Union receives the least funding of any tenancy advocacy service in Australia, equivalent to only $7.63 per renter, at a time when the pressures on renters and greater than ever.
The Tenants Union provides vital advice, advocacy and support to renters. It’s not good enough that funding provided by the Liberal Government has not kept up with increased demand from renters for this important service.
Increased demand for the Tenants Union is yet more evidence that renters need real rights in Lutrwuita / Tasmania. For a decade, the Liberals have failed to take the action needed on housing.
Thanks to the Liberal Government, the housing waitlist has more than doubled and countless rentals have been turned into short-stay accommodation. Renters have been paying more and more for houses which aren’t up to minimum standards, and being evicted without cause.
Tasmanians struggling in this housing crisis need real action on housing from the Rockliff Government. It’s time to regulate short-stay accommodation, build more public housing instead of a billion-dollar stadium, stop unreasonable rent increases and end no-cause evictions.
