The Greens are proud defenders of Lutruwita’s coastlines and waterways. Last summer’s marine catastrophe has laid bare the impact fish farms are having.
The Greens want to transition the industry to on-land and closed-loop, but our 10-point plan would immediately clean up the salmon mess. It would rein in the salmon industry, clean up our waterways, protect our marine environment and strengthen current regulations.
For too long multinationals have had a free ride from Liberal and Labor politicians, exploiting and polluting our once-pristine waterways.
The Greens’ plan to get the pens out of Macquarie Harbour, which is the only way we can hope to save the Maugean skate. We’d stop the unchecked expansion of the industry and mitigate damage to the marine environment.
The world saw the brutal animal cruelty over summer with live fish being loaded into mortality bins. They’ve seen the dead birds caught in nets and seals injured and killed by bean bag bullets. Our plan would immediately stop “licences to kill” for native wildlife, along with cruel seal deterrents.
Our plan cracks down and penalises salmon farm pollution, whether that’s from marine plastics or last summer’s fish chunk event – where diseased, dead fish washed up on beaches across southern Tasmania.
We’d impose strict biosecurity measures and animal welfare standards. Mortality reporting will be mandatory, detailed and public. We’d convert hatcheries to Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) to protect our rivers.
The heating climate means increased marine heatwaves and massive algal blooms occurring around the world, including in Lutruwita/Tasmania. This is the new reality for our precious marine environment – and we need to act.
The Greens in balance of power can clean up Tasmania’s waterways. Our 10-Point plan, along with stronger environment laws, will help fix the mess industrial salmon has wrought upon our waterways.
