The Greens stand with the extraordinary Reedy Marsh and Meander Valley community who will continue to fight ABx’s latest bauxite mine proposal in their backyard.
Last week in a special meeting the Meander Valley council did all in their power to strengthen conditions on ABx’s development application, but it was ultimately approved.
With the threat of an unsightly, hazardous bauxite mine in a kilometre or so away for neighbouring property boundaries, the Reedy Marsh community will not give up their fight.
They have watched the saga of the Campbell Town mine, which failed even after the Tasmanian Government waived its $2.5m debt. With this example in mind, the community are understandably concerned and want answers about how the company will pay for the necessary road upgrades to access the mine site – a condition of their development application approval.
The council decision came days after Mine Watch Meander Valley premiered a stunning new film, ‘Voices of the Meander Valley’. Created by internationally recognised film maker Eugenie Dumont, the documentary clearly shows why the mine should not proceed.
A mine of this type is completely incompatible with neighbouring important agricultural properties and the spectacular Brushy Rivulet Conservation Area.
The damage this mine will cause environmentally and socially will far outweigh any local economic benefit. ABx should listen to the Meander Valley community and withdraw their proposal.
