In a last ditch desperate scaremongering attempt, the Liberals have claimed that the Greens will cut livestock numbers. The Greens are proud to have committed to incentivising and supporting farmers to reduce emissions and mitigate the climate impacts they’re facing – a policy which is in fact very similar to the Liberals’ own.
The greatest threat to Tasmanian farmers is climate change and a government unwilling to take serious action, as we’ve seen the Liberals neglect to do for 11 years. Farmers I speak to recognise climate change impacts as the biggest threat they face, and they want to be part of the solution.
The Liberals are only kidding themselves if they think they can pull the wool over farmers eyes with this nonsense. Tasmanian farmers are clever, innovative and the Greens are right behind them.
The Greens are proud of our long-standing policy to incentivise and support farmers to reduce emissions. We believe providing financial assistance and other resources to assist farmers to help them respond to climate change is something really positive the government should already be doing.
The Greens see exciting opportunities to support farmers who are looking to bring down their emissions. For example, Tasmanian company Sea Forest is delivering amazing results in bringing down carbon emissions by supplementing cattle feed with their product.
We should also be incentivising electrification of our agriculture sector. We know consumers are looking for climate friendly products, and we should help farmers to make the most of this shifting market.
The Liberals should have read their own plan for agriculture before criticising ours – because it says almost exactly the same thing.
The Liberals are concocting baseless scaremongering to try and manufacture public outrage to distract from the strong community opposition to building a billion-dollar stadium. The Greens are focused on delivering positive change on the big issues for Tasmanians – health, housing, and environmental protection.
