The Tasmanian Greens support Metro workers striking this week for better wages and conditions. The Rail, Tram and Bus Union has been scathing of the Liberal Government for failing to ensure a finalised Enterprise Agreement between Metro and their workers.

Industrial action which disrupts the transport services that Tasmanians rely on is not taken lightly. These strikes are the last resort of frustrated workers, who have been trying to secure better pay and working conditions for months without resolution.

Metro workers provide an essential service in helping Tasmanians travel around the state, and they deserve the wages and conditions needed to keep Tasmanians moving. Metro must provide an increased offer on pay and working conditions, ensuring that workers are finally paid the same as their mainland counterparts.

Without a new Enterprise Agreement for Metro workers, there’s no hope of suspended services being restored. It’s unclear how the Liberal Government expects to fulfil the extra services needed for the proposed Macquarie Point Stadium with staff shortages continuing amid pay and condition disagreements.
