Today the Greens are proud to represent the communities of Birralee, Westbury, and surrounds in Parliament by tabling a bill to make Brushy Rivulet a conservation area.
Brushy Rivulet is a beautiful patch of local bushland about five kilometres north of Westbury. It’s rich in biodiversity, a haven for threatened birds, wildlife, and plants and is treasured by the community.
Given its natural and social values, it is no wonder the State and Federal governments agreed to make it a reserve more than two decades ago. But for some reason that never happened, which is why the Greens are moving to correct this historical oversight.
Most people in the community were under the impression this special place was fully protected – that is until the Liberals announced their ill-advised plan to build a prison on the site. From that time on the Greens have been working alongside residents to make sure the area is protected. While the prison plans have been abandoned, we want to make sure this site is protected in perpetuity.
I look forward to talking to Members from all sides of politics about this bill, and am hopeful that they too will support the need to establish the Brushy Rivulet Conservation Area.
