The Greens have tabled a bill to ensure the Environment Protection Authority lives up to its name and actually functions to protect Tasmania’s precious environment.

Tasmania’s environment is under more pressure than ever, from corporations, government apathy and the many impacts of climate change.

In 2007, Labor removed the legislated requirement for the Board of the Environment Protection Authority to ‘protect the environment’. Our Bill restores it.

For years the Environment Protection Authority has been kept weak by the major parties. It’s been toothless, underfunded and unable to take the kind of action Tasmania’s environment desperately needed.

The Greens’ bill will ensure that the functions of the Environment Protection Authority again includes a protecting Tasmania’s environment.

In a biodiversity and climate crisis, we need an Environment Protection Authority that’s truly empowered to protect Tasmania’s unique places and species. It’s a no brainer.

We encourage our colleagues across the Parliament to support our bill, in the interests of protecting Tasmania’s unique and globally significant environment.
