The Greens have tabled a petition with 2780 signatures, calling on the Liberal Government to protect the rights of caravan park residents. The Liberals must step in and ensure that residents of tourist parks have legal protections from eviction without sufficient notice.
Everyone has the right to a safe and affordable home. Yet tourist park residents do not have the same protections in Tasmania as other long-term residents. Lutruwita / Tasmania is the only state where long-stay residents of residential parks don’t have legal protection.
It leaves many vulnerable to exploitation and eviction. At the Beauty Point Tourist Park, residents have been threatened with eviction with only 28 days notice.
Many of these residents are elderly and ill, and had planned to live the rest of their lives at the park. To be threatened with homelessness with only a month’s notice is seriously distressing for these residents.
The Greens call on the Liberals to immediately enact an interim regulation to ensure certainty for park owners and residents, release a response to their discussion paper on the long-term residency in caravan parks, and introduce legislation to protect the rights of caravan park residents. The Liberal Government must ensure that residents like those at Beauty Point Tourist Park have a safe and secure place to live.
