The Greens strongly support the Bob Brown Foundation protesters facing court today, and thank them for being such passionate and courageous advocates for Tasmania’s forests.
Tasmania is meant to be the clean and green state, but despite the rest of Australia and the world moving away from native forest logging, Liberal and Labor politicians continue to promote this destructive practice. It’s appalling.
In 2024, in a climate crisis, it’s unbelievable we’re still seeing native forests being clearfelled. Vast tracts of threatened species habitat are destroyed and millions of tonnes of carbon released when the remains are burned. The Liberals and Labor have both said they want to keep doing this until at least 2040.
With both major political parties still backing native forest logging, it’s only the Greens, the environment movement, and concerned citizens who are stepping in to defend the forests. That’s exactly what Bob Brown, Colette Harmsen, and Ali Alishah have done – as have so many other Tasmanians.
Despite the Liberals’ best efforts to crack down on peaceful protests, forest defenders will not be deterred. They will keep fighting for these critically important places until Tasmania’s native forests are protected for good.
