When Parliament resumes on 19 November, the Greens will introduce an amendment bill to strengthen political donations transparency.

Our party has been sharing information with the community for years about who donates to support our work, but Tasmania’s weak donation laws have allowed the major parties to hide their corporate backers’ contributions to their campaigns.

Secrecy and corporate influence is corrosive to democracy and erodes public trust in elected representatives. It influences their policies and decisions.

It’s past time for the Liberals and Labor to be transparent about the money they’re getting from the gambling, salmon, tobacco and  mining industries, and property developers.

Our reforms will ensure all politicians are transparent with Tasmanians about who’s funding them. These changes have been considered by the recent parliamentary committee, and had the broad support of members.

We are hopeful our colleagues in both Houses will see the merit in our amendments to the Electoral Act and support them in the interests of our democracy.
