The Greens welcome the Premier’s eleventh hour intervention scrapping the overreaching draft regulations on fresh produce growers.
This is a win for thousands of Tasmanians who took a stand, and it’s a win for the humble roadside veggie stand!
The Premier’s decision to direct the department to start from scratch on new regulations is a direct result of people power calling out an overreaching regulation placing unreasonable expectations of small scale fresh producer growers.
The Premier has now publicly committed that:
‘No changes will be approved that makes it harder for Tasmanians to grow, share, donate or sell small amounts of fresh local produce in their communities. Not one.’
Today is a win for people power and common sense, but only tiime will tell if the Premier and the Liberal Government remain committed to this statement.
The Greens remain ready to speak up and push back on these regulations should they return in a similar heavy-handed fashion that negatively impact Tasmania’s non-commercial, community gardens, home growers, crop swappers and small roadside vendors.
