The Greens welcome the opening of the financial redress scheme for people historically charged or convicted for being homosexual or crossdressing.

The redress scheme was initially introduced by the Greens, as an amendment to the bill expunging historical offences for homosexuality and crossdressing. We acted on the work of Rodney Croome from Equality Tasmania and others in the LGBTIQA+ community.

Simply being yourself, and loving who you love, should never have been a crime in Tasmania. Laws that criminalised homosexuality and crossdressing were unjust, cruel, and discriminatory. They had painful consequences, and those affected by them deserve this chance at financial compensation.

This redress scheme is a nation-leading step towards justice, equality, and healing for the LGBTIQA+ community. The Greens will continue to advocate for the rights of LGBTIQA+ people, as we have for decades.
