An outbreak of kennel cough has caused the suspension of greyhound racing in Tasmania. It reinforces the need to end greyhound racing in this state.
The suffering and deaths of greyhounds at the hands of the racing industry continues. Three dogs have already been reported dead due to racing injuries since 1 January, and in recent days another has been listed as deceased. Now an outbreak of kennel cough is also killing these beautiful dogs.
The way the greyhound industry operates – frequently transporting dogs across the state and Bass Strait, while confining them in close quarters – has been spreading sickness. It has been confirmed to the Greens that the outbreak is claiming lives.
Is it any wonder this industry has lost its social license? The well-funded industry campaign trying to derail the end of greyhound racing can’t cover up the animal abuse at the heart of this industry. They’re not pulling the wool over Tasmanians’ eyes.
While the dogs have been given a reprieve from racing until 9 March, the outbreak reinforces the need to end greyhound racing in Tasmania. It’s time we stopped the suffering of greyhounds at the hands of the racing industry, and let these beautiful, intelligent dogs run free.
