Tasmanians are rightfully concerned to hear the Liberal Government are opening an EOI process for private developers to use public crown land in Tasmania’s north. It seems the Liberals are back at their oldest game, flogging off public land for exclusive, private developments.
The Liberals’ have already attempted opening up public lands inside parks to private developers. Their EOI process is secretive and has shut Tasmanians out from entering public land, and iconic Tasmanian landscapes.
It now appears the Liberals’ agenda of privatisation is being extended to public land in northern Tasmania, under the guise of a proposed “Wellness Precinct”.
Against local community wishes, an EOI has already gone out for a private “wellness” development at Hastings Caves. Now they’re branding the north of the state of a “wellness” tourism capital.
The Liberal Government have a lot of questions to answer. Where is this public land the Liberals are opening up to private developers? Will it lock out Tasmanians from using the land freely?
Have any private operators expressed interest thus far? Will Tasmanians get a say, or will it be a secretive land hand over like in Tasmania’s parks and Hastings Caves?
Ironically, a terrific wellbeing assets is equitable access to nature, which the public land the Liberals are commercialising already provides. Yet again, the Liberals are seeking to hand over public land to private interests, and the public deserves answers.
