The Greens welcome Tasmania Police’s announcement that finally they have launched an online crime reporting portal – an overdue measure that we have long pushed for.
As the Greens have said for years, introducing a way of reporting crimes online is a basic, modern, and common-sense step that makes it easier for people to provide important information to police. Other states have already gone down this modern road long ago, and it’s beyond time Tasmania caught up.
It’s good to hear that online reporting for minor crimes is now open, and that it will be available for crimes of sexual violence in the coming months, as this was an outstanding recommendation of the Weiss Review to be implemented.
Online reporting will allow people to be confident in their anonymity and makes it easier for people to report the entirety of information they want, in the way they want to. It will also help police to have better information and are better able to do their jobs.
Providing online reporting for sexual assault matters is critically important and we’re glad to hear this is not far away. Having this option available helps make sure victim-survivors can more easily lodge a contemporary record of what happened to them, and importantly will allow for anonymous two-way communication with police as well.
