A Greens motion committing the Parliament to support multicultural Tasmanians, condemning nationwide anti-immigration rallies and resisting racism passed the House of Assembly with full support.
Anti-immigration rallies were held in Tasmania and across the country two weeks ago. They gave a platform for fascists and neo-nazis who targeted Aboriginal people and multicultural Australians. Many people from these communities felt fearful and understandably unsafe.
The Greens’ motion, supported by all parties and independents, committed Parliament to stand in solidarity with migrant and Aboriginal communities targeted by these rallies. It condemned the hateful and racist attacks, and violence, on display.
The motion expressed Parliament’s support for multicultural Tasmanian communities. MPs from all sides of politics recognised migrants bring skills, perspectives and cultural diversity that benefit and strengthen our community.
People of all cultures, colours, faiths and nations should feel welcome, included and safe in this State.
The Parliament also recognised the need to strengthen existing hate crime laws, to protect our nation-leading anti-discrimination laws, and for a meaningful anti-racism strategy to be developed in Tasmania.
This powerful parliamentary statement of support shows the unified intention of this 52nd Parliament for our diverse Tasmanian society. There are real actions to improve the lives of all Tasmanians that need to follow this motion. The Greens will work in good faith with Government, Opposition and Crossbench members to achieve them.
