A new social media post by Police Minister Felix Ellis has raised further questions and serious concerns about the Liberals’ approach to gun safety reform.

The Rockliff Government has repeatedly said they’ll be consulting on proposed gun safety reforms, but never said how, who with, or on what timeframe.

The growing concern about the Liberals’ approach to this issue has been reinforced by a new social media post by Police Minister Felix Ellis. In the post, he has asked his followers to complete a “2 minute firearms survey”. The survey is not hosted by any Government agency and is instead run by his personal office.

Is this the consultation the Minister promised? Or is it a cynical attempt by Mr Ellis to capitalise on this deeply serious issue by collecting Tasmanians’ contact details for his own use? While delaying genuine reform on a serious issue?
It would be deeply troubling if Tasmania’s Police Minister was more interested in expanding his political campaigning tools than he is in measures to ensure community safety.

In the short time since this post was published, I’ve already heard advocates, both in favour and opposed to reform, express dismay about the Ministers actions. That’s a pretty clear sign this is completely the wrong approach.

Minister Ellis needs to stop the games.

There is no excuse for any more delay in committing to gun safety reforms. If he can’t commit now, he must be clear with Tasmanians about when and how the Rockliff Government is going to make a decision.
