2025 saw Tasmania’s public housing waitlist consistently trend upwards, with no months of retraction and an end to the year with more than 5,400 applicants, according to the Homes Tasmania’s Dashboard. With need continuing to grow, the Liberal Government are failing to help Tasmanians struggling to find affordable housing.
The public housing waitlist increased more than 11% in 2025. The number of Tasmanians needing social and affordable housing is only going up and its now over a year since there was a positive, albeit temporary, improvement on the numbers.
I hear all the time from members of the community struggling to find an affordable place to live. People are already struggling with the rising cost of living, and the Liberals’ failure to bring down skyrocketing rents is only making things harder.
For more than a decade, the Liberals haven’t taken the action needed. The public housing waitlist will just keep going up unless the Liberals build more public homes and stop Tasmanian homes being converted to Airbnb.
The Liberals’ priorities just aren’t right. They should be building new homes for Tasmanians doing it tough, not a billion-dollar stadium.
