Given the shortage of housing and medium density development in Hobart, news that the former K&D site in central Hobart has been sold to a car yard operator is dispiriting.
The former K&D site presents one of the most exciting opportunities the Hobart CBD has seen in decades. It could be developed into something amazing for the city – including medium density housing, opportunities for small business, and vibrant public spaces.
To hear UTAS sold the site to a car yard operator, despite the community calls for a public benefit development, raises concerns that this will be a missed opportunity for our city.
Exactly what the buyer is planning remains unclear. We hope they stay true to their original statement about delivering something that enhances the city and has public benefit.
While another car dealership isn’t an inspiring prospect, it doesn’t necessarily mean there can’t be a range of other uses for the K&D area. The Greens will keep pushing for a development that delivers housing and other public interest outcomes for Hobart.
We hope the buyer’s statement that they want to contribute to Hobart’s future and deliver community benefits is a real reflection of their intentions, not just a nice talking point. If they want Hobartians to get on board, they should share as much information as they can about their plans for this important site and involve the locals in the conversation.
