In response to Greens’ questions, the Liberals have made assurances DPAC’s Resilience and Recovery Tasmania will not be reduced in size.
But, we know for a fact jobs in the Resilience and Recovery unit are on the table for the axe.
The whole unit is up for review, under the Liberals’ plan to slash the public service. What exactly does that mean for the resilience and recovery services Tasmanians rely on as a climate-charged El Niño bears down on this island?
Will the working hours of staff be reduced? Are knowledgeable and experienced individuals in the unit going to be pushed out, and replaced with cheaper hires? What roles and functions will be replaced by AI?
It’s the fundamental duty of government to prepare the community for the coming climate impacts. So far, the Liberals have done woefully.
With the worst El Niño ever recorded intensifying and summer coming, the work of this government entity is more important than ever. The Liberals need to take climate preparedness seriously.
The Liberals need to take these jobs off the table and provide the public with a guarantee Resilience and Recovery Tasmania will be fully, expertly staffed ahead of this coming summer of near-certain weather extremes.
