Today the Tasmanian Greens were proud to launch our plan to make sure every Tasmanian has a place to call home, by making the investment necessary to build 10,000 homes by 2032.

Jeremy Rockliff’s re-announcement of his “10,000 new homes by 2032” target has done nothing to fix the fairytale figures underpinning the policy. The $1.5 billion allocated over ten years by the Liberals is only enough to build 3,000 homes – not 10,000.

If we are going to build the housing Tasmanians are crying out for, we need to put our money where our mouth is. That means real investment to deliver on the promise of 10,000 homes, not hollow promises that will never be delivered.

The Greens’ plan is to provide the funding needed to get on with the job and to build the 10,000 homes that have been promised. And we’re also making sure this gets done by creating a Public Works Department, employing tradies directly to focus on building these homes.

With a new government and the Greens in balance of power we will fight hard for genuine investment in building public and affordable housing. This should be a top priority – not a billion-dollar stadium.
