New data released by Domain shows rents are continuing to skyrocket in Tasmania, and demonstrates why the Rockliff Government must urgently act to limit Airbnb.

The Domain report shows rents in Hobart rising by 7.1% in just one year – faster than any other capital city. This has been driven by an alarmingly low vacancy rate of just 0.3%. Rent increases across other cities and regional Tasmania were even higher.

It’s shocking to see the cost of renting has gone up by $2000 a year or more across Hobart, Launceston, Devonport,  and Burnie.  With so many rental households already struggling after years of rent hikes, that’s a huge spike that most people just can’t afford.

These massive rent hikes are clear evidence of the government’s failure to deal with the housing crisis, and show why action is so urgently needed.

We absolutely need to see more money invested into building more homes – that’s critical. And we need to strengthen laws to protect renters. But the biggest thing the government could do to make more rentals available and to drive down prices is to take strong action on Airbnb.

There are thousands of whole houses across the state being used for short stay accommodation, rather than as homes for Tasmanians. That’s not good enough and we need to see the government change their approach to this issue.

The Liberals need to immediately press pause on all whole-home short stay permits and then introduce measures to bring the thousands of homes lost to platforms like Airbnb back into the rental market.
