Cotality’s latest Quarterly Rental Review shows rents are continuing to rise while vacancy rates lower in Hobart. With Tasmanians already struggling to afford the basics as fuel prices rise, the Liberal Government must take action on rental increases and unfair evictions.
The latest Quarterly Rental Review by Cotality shows Hobart rents have risen 1.9% in the last three months and vacancy rates have dropped to 1.6%. In the last month alone, rents rose by 0.6%.
Affording the basics was already hard enough, but things have only got worse with the conflict in the Middle East raising fuel prices. Tasmanians shouldn’t also have to cope with rent hikes during this crisis.
Without protections against unfair evictions, more and more Tasmanians will struggle to find an affordable home if they’re kicked out of their rentals for no good reason during this escalating cost of living crisis. With winter approaching, people shouldn’t be left out in the cold.
The Liberals need to take immediate action to make sure things don’t get any worse for Tasmanians doing it tough. They must free rents and protect tenants from unfair evictions during this crisis.
