This year’s Tasmanian State Service Employee Survey paints a concerning picture of declining engagement and job satisfaction across our public service.
We’re seeing public service workers leaving their jobs at alarming rates, resulting in understaffing, overwork and burnout for remaining staff. A further one in ten employees are considering quitting their job in the next three years, so things are set to get much worse.
We’re already see the effects of staff shortages. The latest NAPLAN results show Tasmanian students are suffering from the lack of teachers and other school staff, as a result of chronic underfunding of schools.
Public servants are the lifeblood of this state – they care for Tasmanians when they’re sick, teach our children and keep our communities safe.
Hiring more workers is important, but the Rockliff Government must also do more to support our public service workers to stay in these core sectors. Public servants need better opportunities, more recognition for their work, reduced workloads and better pay.
In the upcoming State Budget, the Liberal Government must invest in supporting our public service workers, rather than prioritising a billion-dollar stadium.
