A sixth horse has been killed this racing season, with The Inevitable tragically losing his life at the Launceston Cup yesterday. Sadly, the only thing that was inevitable at the event was innocent animals being mistreated and put at extreme risk in the pursuit of profit.
It’s so devastating to see yet another beautiful and innocent animal die in racing. The Inevitable was one of the state’s best racers, but even his star status couldn’t save him from the terrible fate suffered by so many horses and dogs at the hands of this brutal industry.
The racing industry’s business model is built on exploiting animals for profit. The Inevitable’s death will receive plenty of attention thanks to his high profile, but this isn’t an isolated incident. Neglect, abuse and cruelty are features of the industry, with countless animals killed and mistreated every year.
Despite the widespread cruelty in racing, and growing public opposition, this industry receives almost $40 million in taxpayer funding every single year. It’s completely unacceptable.
It’s well past time for Liberal and Labor politicians to quit playing cheerleader for this cruel industry. At the very least, the major parties should get on board with putting a stop to the vast sums of public money being given to horse and dog racing.
