Cassy O’Connor MLC has tabled a petition on behalf of Friends of the Bays, calling on the Liberals to stop expansion of polluting fish farms in Storm Bay, Frederick Henry Bay and Norfolk Bay.
The Friends of the Bays group spent months gathering 4,000 signatures to the petition.
Thousands of Tasmanians are demanding the government stops multinational salmon corporation Petuna from installing fifty open-net pens off Yellow Bluff in Storm Bay. The community are concerned about the threat industrial aquaculture operations pose to the diversity of these wild marine waters.
People are seeing fish farms already polluting and wrecking the ocean life in waters near salmon farming.
The petitioners join widespread community calls for the government to move fish farms out of inshore waters and into closed-loop, on-land systems. These are world’s best practice, and provide sustainable long-term employment.
The Rockliff Government should respect and listen to these communities. It’s past time the Liberals halt the expansion of polluting and harmful fish farming and move the industry to on-land, closed-loop operations.
