In a heartless move, the management of the Beauty Point Tourist Park have commenced evictions of three residents, amplifying the distress of elderly and vulnerable long-term residents.

The Greens have written to Minister Ogilvie demanding urgent action to help resolve this issue. The government can and must act to prevent residents becoming homeless.

The three residents evicted today are believed to be among the residents who have spoken publicly about their plight.

The residents of Beauty Point Tourist Park deserve security and respect. These draconian rules from the park management are an afront to common decency – but without real legislative protection, situations like this can unfold across the state.

Residents have raised this issue with Government MPs over several months, however, they have seen no evidence of action despite the urgency of the situation. The Liberals must bring forward legislation as soon as possible to protect the rights of vulnerable residents and ensure they can enjoy secure, stable housing.

Tasmania remains the only state without legislative protections for long-stay residents of residential parks. It leaves many, like those in Beauty Point, vulnerable to exploitation and eviction.

As of today, three residents of the park have 28 days to uproot their life and find somewhere else to live. It is deeply concerning that law-abiding Tasmanian residents can be treated so poorly by a Tasmanian business.

Many of the long-term residents of the park have planned to live their lives out there and are deeply distressed at being treated so poorly and placed at risk of homelessness.

The Greens are calling on the Tasmanian government to act quickly. We will support any moves that stop this shocking act.

The Beauty Point Tourist Park Association has started up a fighting fund to help maintain their homes – https://www.gofundme.com/f/beauty-point-tourist-park-fighting-fund?modal=share&source=top+nav&modal=share&source=top+nav
