The Tasmanian Greens reiterate our calls for the government to urgently move to make industrial manslaughter an offence in Tasmania.

People have a basic right to be safe in their workplace, but disturbingly that’s not the case for many. Every year thousands of Tasmanians are seriously injured at work, and tragically we have seen fatalities consistently occur too.

Employers have too often shirked their safety responsibilities, and its everyday Tasmanians just going about their day at work that end up paying the price. We need change.

While every other state has either implemented, or is planning to implement, industrial manslaughter laws, Tasmania is lagging behind. It’s not good enough.

The Rockliff government needs to start listening to unions and workers, and urgently move to amend our laws to make industrial manslaughter an offence.
