The Greens applaud the 38 vets and vet nurses who have signed on to the campaign to end greyhound racing. Making a public statement of this nature, given the power of the industry, is courageous.
Raw footage released today by greyhound advocates alongside the vets’ announcement, shows the horrific suffering of these gentle animals before they are killed. This is the reality of racing cruelty – an obscene level of injury, euthanasia and death, and all of it publicly funded.
Vets and vet nurses work with dogs every day. They know exactly what animals who are suffering and in pain look like.
Some of the vets calling for an end to greyhound racing are the leaders in their profession in Tasmania. Their informed comments and their courage cannot be dismissed by the Liberals or Labor as they persistently back in this cruel industry.
If the major parties won’t listen to growing number of Tasmanians opposing greyhound racing, they should at least listen to animal welfare professionals.
The cruelty of racing in Tasmania is entirely funded by the taxpayer, to the tune of $37million this year alone.
We hope today’s calls from vets will encourage MLCs to support the Greens’ move for an inquiry into the funding deed. More importantly, we join veterinarian professionals in calling for an end to greyhound racing.
