Wilderness Defenders Will Never Give Up on Lake Malbena

The divisive, destructive Lake Malbena proposal is back.

Would-be developer, Daniel Hackett, and his mystery backers just won’t get the message. Overwhelmingly, Tasmanians don’t support privatisation of protected areas and they reject what this opportunist developer is offering.

The federal environment department has once again called for submissions for the heli-tourism and luxury lodge plan for Halls Island, Lake Malbena, inside the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

The controversial development has already been rejected by the Central Highlands Council, Supreme Court, the Federal Court – and the people of Tasmania.

No one, apart from Mr Hackett, his industry backers and his Liberal cheerleaders, wants this privatising, wilderness and heritage degrading project to go ahead.

Bizarrely, the Federal EPBC website directs public comment to the developer himself. The same developer has submitted noise impact assessments he himself has undertaken  – so much for independent assessment.

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, Wilderness Society, Tasmanian National Park Association, Fishers and Walkers and wilderness guides are calling on the Federal Environment minister to halt a clearly corrupted process and undertake a proper assessment.

We urge everyone who opposes this World Heritage land grab to hold off their submissions until there is proper process – overseen by the federal government.

The Greens stand with Aboriginal Tasmanians, conservationists, anglers, bushwalkers and wilderness lovers, in vowing to fight this development every step of the way.

Hackett, his backers and his cheer squad in government remain on notice.
