Primary Industries and Water – Crop Overspray

One of our constituents has been patiently and politely trying to find out for years what the chemical makeup is in the spray that drifts over his property, his veggie gardens and his family. He has video footage and soil testing revealing amounts of dangerous chemicals. This testing isn't useful because by the time the departmental office does the testing, the active ingredients degrade. He's tried to write to the orchard to define what chemicals are used and what dosage.

Primary Industries and Water – Feral Pigs

Minister, we're hearing increasing reports from the community about the impact of feral pigs, and we know how incredibly detrimental they can be. They are just one of the increasing numbers of invasive species that we're hearing about. There are also reports of, for example, goats. Obviously, the tracking of these animals would be easy under the new PIC scheme coming in. From 2025 that would be easier. When this happens, will the government be declaring unmarked roaming pigs and goats and other destructive animals as a pest under the Nature Conservation (Wildlife) Regulations 2021 so that it will enable effective control of these animals?

Following on from Ms Finlay's line of questioning, it is rather putting the fox in charge of the henhouse with the system we have now. It was always the intent when these self‑managed community‑run irrigation schemes were set up that they were just that, community‑run irrigation schemes. Can you, minister, specifically point to what is legislatively standing in your way from returning the RWE to WISL or the Winnaleah scheme?

Minister, there have been multiple studies on the health impacts for the use of the chemical Paraquat. It is banned in 69 countries. What is the Tasmanian government doing in this space? What research are you doing in assessing the possible legacy impacts that it has on our farmers? Are you going to be following suit with many other countries and working towards banning it when there are other options now available?

Minister, I heard your comments earlier that one of the concerns with the Exploration Drilling Grant Initiative (EDGI) scheme is the lack of transparency that is publicly available in terms of who is being awarded the grants and how much for. It's pretty standard practice for similar grant schemes that are regularly rolled out and have been continuing - this one's been going on since 2018 - to have these details periodically updated on a website. Will you implement such a website for the EDGI scheme?

In January this year, the former minister approved the renewal of Venture Minerals mine lease at Riley Creek. That's 5M2012. That had been pending renewal for two years. Within days of that lease being renewed, Venture had put that mine lease on the market. Was the Department aware of the company's intention to sell at the time that they renewed the lease?

Venture Minerals, now trading as Critica Limited, their lease 3M/ 2012 at Livingstone, on the Stanley River, that expired on 1 June 2022 and the lease is now listed on MRT's website as pending renewal. What's the issue that's preventing the renewal of this lease at the moment? Is that in relation to compliance per chance?
