Ms BURNET question to TREASURER, Mr FURGUSON
Madam Speaker, congratulations on your new position.
Treasurer, during the election you promised $5 million to reopen the Glenorchy pool, which is welcome, but does not secure the facility for the future. This pool is an essential community facility. You promised the extremely rich AFL hundreds of millions of dollars and land to build a Macquarie Point stadium and high‑performance centres. At the same time, the Glenorchy community loses an essential place for social interaction and wellbeing. What funding will you commit in the Budget to secure the future of our community pool beyond the $5 million scoping project?
ANSWER
Thank you, and congratulations on your election, Ms Burnet. I am not the portfolio holder. However, as Treasurer, I am happy to indicate that we will be honouring all the commitments we made in the election in the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future. We are grateful for the support we have received for our plan and, not speaking for anybody else, those who have given supply and confidence to the government, in particular. I also thank those members who are backing the plan, as Tasmanians did.
In respect of the pool, we will be honouring our $5 million commitment. That is not for a scoping study, that is for remediation. We have committed $5 million to the Glenorchy City Council for immediate repairs and restoration of the Glenorchy pool as part of that plan. That sits on top of the $200,000 grant we provided to council last year to allow that feasibility study to be undertaken, playing its role in determining the facility’s future. Look forward to seeing that appear in the Budget on 12 September.
