Ms O’CONNOR question to MINISTER for ENERGY and RENEWABLES, Mr DUIGAN

I am interested in exploring the minister’s thinking on an answer he gave to the member for Nelson. Are you talking about two different bodies of work? A climate risk assessment which, as you have described, is quite a technical document, and a disaster resilience strategy, which would be a more public document. The reason I ask is that I am sure you are aware that, if we are to effectively adapt to climate and global heating, we are going to have to take communities with us, and government has a job of work to do in engaging with communities.

What is your thinking or your plan for making sure Tasmanians broadly across the island are aware of the risks of global heating and how it might impact on them and what they can do in the future to protect themselves and their families and their properties? This is a genuine inquiry.

ANSWER

Mr President, I will seek some advice.

I thank the member for the question. I confirm that they are two distinct pieces of work: the climate risk assessment and the disaster risk assessment. Two separate pieces of work and, in terms of what we would do to inform the community and allow the community to stay informed, I think will be informed to some degree by what is revealed in our climate risk assessments and issues that are of interest to the wider community. That would help inform the work we would do in speaking to the community.
