Ms BADGER question to MINISTER for POLICE, FIRE and EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT, Mr ELLIS

[10.47 a.m.]
Over the weekend, the ABC reported that German authorities are conducting a mirror proceedings investigation into the murder of Launceston woman Jingai Zhang, who was violently killed in 2020 by Tobias Pick, a German backpacker. Tobias Pick pled guilty to manslaughter and served only 2.5 years before being deported to Germany. A central question being considered by German authorities is whether that sentence was sufficient. If they determine that Mr Pick would have received a longer sentence in Germany, he may face further proceedings. German police are likely to require broad access to the evidence collected by the Tasmanian investigation of this matter. To date, have Tasmania Police provided any evidence or information to German police? Can you confirm that Tasmania Police will fully cooperate with German authorities so they can conduct their investigation into this terrible crime?

ANSWER

Honourable Speaker, I thank the honourable member for the question. Our hearts, of course, go out to the family of the deceased. I’m happy to follow up on that matter and take it on notice.
