Ms O’CONNOR question to MINISTER for PARKS and HERITAGE and MINISTER for SPORT, Mr DUIGAN
Ms O’CONNOR – Minister, as you know, the avian influenza virus H5N1 has arrived in Tasmania and you are no doubt aware that shorebirds are at particular risk. What we’ve seen in the Northern Hemisphere over the past two years is that tern populations can be hit particularly hard by this virus. The 54th Tasmanian Sand Enduro race takes place from 31 October to 1 November this year at Peron Dunes in the St Helens Point Conservation Area. This is peak breeding time for the hooded plovers and for fairy terns, which are not only threatened, but they’re also put at risk by the avian influenza virus.
Can you confirm that Parks and Wildlife is negotiating with event organisers to change the date of the 54th Tasmanian Sand Enduro race to a day that does not have such a potentially significant impact on the breeding of birds which are placed at risk by the avian influenza virus?
ANSWER
Mr DUIGAN – Mr President, I’m certainly aware that Parks would be talking to the organisers of that event, as happens most years, I think. It always raises some questions. As to whether there is a specific conversation about changing the date, I would need to take on notice and get back to you.
Ms O’CONNOR – My understanding is that in the briefing today that was provided to members of parliament with an update from government and agencies on the response to avian influenza virus, the briefing was informed that Parks was having those discussions with the event organisers about a change of date, so you might update the House when we get back in there, but I’m very happy to have updated you. Thank you.
