Honourable Speaker, I thank Ms Johnston, the member for Clark, for bringing this motion forward and working it through so comprehensively. We read it very closely and take a strong interest in this and for opportunities to improve this.
Deputy Speaker, I rise to speak on the most critical matter of public importance - the children in Ashley Youth Detention Centre. The commission of inquiry made it very clear that there are live and current risks for children at Ashley Youth Detention Centre.
On 22 May, the Commissioner for Children and Young People released a statement revealing that at the beginning of that week there had been 26 children and young people detained at Ashley Youth Detention Centre, highlighting that this was the highest number of children held in detention in at least a decade.
